One of the most common misconceptions about digital signage is that it requires specialist hardware — Android media players, proprietary boxes, or a visit from an engineer. For NeoSgn, none of that is true. If you have a Smart TV with a browser, you can be showing digital content in under 10 minutes. This guide walks through the full process.
What You Need
- Any Smart TV with a built-in web browser (see compatibility list below)
- A Wi-Fi connection (or ethernet cable) at your venue
- A NeoSgn account (free demo available)
- 5–10 minutes
That's it. No hardware to buy, no Android stick, no HDMI adaptor, no specialist installation.
Compatible Smart TVs
If your TV runs Android TV or Google TV, you can also install the Chrome browser from the Play Store for an optimal experience. On Samsung and LG, the built-in browser works perfectly.
Step-by-Step Setup
-
Create your NeoSgn account
Sign up at neosgn.co.uk. During the launch period, setup is free and the first month is included. You'll be in the dashboard within 2 minutes.
-
Upload your content
Add images, videos, or use a built-in template to create your first slide. If you have photos of your dishes, menu prices, or brand images — upload them. If not, a simple text-based template with your menu details works perfectly as a starting point.
Tip: Start with 3–5 slides. You can always add more once you're up and running. -
Create a playlist
Arrange your slides into a playlist, set the duration for each slide (8–12 seconds is typical), and optionally set a schedule — for example, a "breakfast" playlist that plays until 11am and a "main" playlist that takes over after that.
-
Open the player on your TV
On your Smart TV, open the browser and navigate to neosgn.com/tv. The player will load and display a short pairing code on screen.
Samsung: press the Home button → Apps → Internet. LG: press the Home button → Web Browser. -
Pair the TV with your account
In your NeoSgn dashboard, go to Devices → Add Device and enter the pairing code shown on the TV screen. The TV will be linked to your account within seconds.
-
Assign a playlist to the TV
In the dashboard, assign your playlist to the newly added device. The TV will begin displaying your content immediately — no TV remote needed again.
-
Lock the TV in signage mode (optional but recommended)
To prevent staff from accidentally changing the channel, most Smart TVs have a "hotel mode" or "kiosk mode" in their settings that locks the remote. Alternatively, NeoSgn can be set to full-screen mode so the TV remote has no visible effect on the content.
Samsung: Settings → General → Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC) → Off. Also set TV to start in browser on power-up.
Tips for a Professional-Looking Setup
- Screen size: For a café counter or bar, a 43" or 50" screen is typically sufficient. For a larger restaurant or pub with viewing distance over 3 metres, a 55–65" screen works better.
- Orientation: Landscape (horizontal) is standard for menu boards. Portrait (vertical) works well for narrower wall spaces and entrance displays.
- Brightness: Set TV brightness to 70–80% for most indoor environments. For window-facing screens competing with daylight, set to maximum.
- Auto-start on power: Set the TV to boot directly into the browser and navigate to neosgn.com/tv. Most Smart TVs support auto-launch apps or browser URLs on startup through their settings.
- Wired connection: If your venue Wi-Fi is unreliable, plug the TV into your router via ethernet. NeoSgn caches content locally, so a brief disconnection won't interrupt playback — but a stable connection ensures updates arrive instantly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to leave the TV on all the time?
No. Set the TV to turn on and off with your venue's opening hours using the built-in timer in the TV settings. NeoSgn will resume the correct playlist when the TV powers back on.
What happens if my internet goes down?
NeoSgn caches your content on the device. If the internet drops, your screens continue playing the last loaded playlist without interruption. Updates made during the outage will sync automatically when connectivity is restored.
Can I use a TV I already own?
Yes — any Smart TV with a browser works. You don't need to buy new hardware unless your existing TV is too old to have a built-in browser (generally anything from 2016 onwards will have one).
Can multiple members of staff manage the dashboard?
Yes. You can invite team members or managers to access the dashboard with their own logins. Permissions can be set to restrict what each user can change.
Do I need to use a Fire Stick, Chromecast, or Android box?
No — these are not required with NeoSgn. The built-in browser on your Smart TV handles everything. That said, if your TV is very old and lacks a browser, a £30 Amazon Fire Stick with the Silk browser installed will work.
